While taking supplements of vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc., are always recommended when health is not optimum, the purpose of this section is to offer solutions specific to Herpes.
While there are many providers of OTC products online, Puritan. dot com is the supplier we recommend, due to their indefinite pricing policies that facilitate discounts when buying two or more of a given product. We have used this service in the past and found them to be secure and reliable.
Go to Puritan dot com and create an account. Login. Query your products. Click on a specific product. You will find a red heart featured below the image of the product. Click the heart to save that selection to your favorites. When you have a full list, click on 'My Favorites' to bring up your list and simplify your purchase.
The following products have been found to be efficacious in the OTC treatment of Herpes. Your list of favorites should start with these.
Lysine is available as an ingestible and as a topical. We recommend both. Dosages up to 3 grams, three times a day, are considered safe for most adults. Take with meals, especially meals heavy with Arginine-rich foods.
Vitamin C has been found to speed up remission of Herpes outbreaks. Those who supplement agree that FDA recommendations are too low. Supplementation dosages recommended are 3,000 milligrams (3 grams) when healthy, 5,000 milligrams (5 grams) when not. Space out your dosages throughout the day and take with meals.
Bioflavanoids often go hand in hand with Vitamin C, in nature as well as in supplements. They can be purchased in combination with Vitamin C as well as separately.
Zinc is a carrier for Vitamin C and should always be consumed at the same time. 30-50 milligrams per day is the recommended dosage. Take with meals. Use of topical zinc to prevent recurrent herpes simplex infection: review of literature and suggested protocols . OTC Zinc (Oxide) ointment is available as Bacitracin.
The herb Astrogalus has been found to have positive effects towards Herpes remission. Astragalus is available as both an ingestible and also as a topical. We recommend both. The liquid extract, without alcohol, can be combined with the Lysine ointment or applied separately. Use as needed.
Olive Leaf Extract has been found to have both hypotensive and antiviral effects. Can be applied topically or ingested. There are precautions. Please read my page on this topic before using this product.
Lemon Balm has been found to reduce HSV-1 sores up to 98.8% and HSV-2 sores up to 97.2%. See 2008 article at PubMed on my Genital Herpes in the News page for details.
